Tombstone Tuesday -- Tom J. Johnston Jr.

This is my grandfather, Tom J Johnston, born 7 Oct 1912 in Comanche County, Texas to Thomas Newton Johnston & Nell Hutson, and died at home on 11 Jul 1973.  I was 19 went he died and his was the first funeral I had attended.  He was a quiet man and us kids were a bit afraid of him.  We called him Tom-Tom instead of grandfather or grandpa.  He married Pansy Louise Lancaster 15 Dec 1933 and they had one daughter, Lela Nell, born 21 Aug 1934.  He served a short time in the Seebees during World War II until he was medically discharged.  He last worked as a carpenter at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.

Today is a big milestone. This is the 100th blog post I have written and the 6th anniversary of the beginning of this blog. I began the blog on January 15, 2011, through a blog writing class I took at California Genealogical Society, taught by Craig Siulinski. John Coor of Copiah County Made an Agreement with Joel Hoggatt

This week at RootsTech 2024, FamilySearch announced a new feature that an every-word search was available for U.S. deeds and probates. It is still in the trial mode and can be found at https://www.familysearch.org/en/labs/ . This is the search screen. It clearly states it is for US land and probate records and Mexico notary records. You can do a keyword search or if you click on the “more options” you can add a name. My Find I immediately gave it a try and searched first for records of the COOR family using the keyword search. Up first came deeds from Wayne County, North Carolina.  At the top, you can filter using record year, record type, record place, and collection. For the past few days, I have mainly filtered by record place. I filtered down to Mississippi. You can even filter to the county. The first entry was a document I had not seen before. 52 Ancestors -- Week 9: Melissa Ann Welch Coor

Amy Johnson Crow of  No Story Too Small  has created a new theme called  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks . I think it’s a great way to write about one person. This will help me see what I have and what I’m missing for additional research. Melissa Ann Welch was born 8 May 1840 in Crystal Springs, Copiah County, Mississippi. [1] Her parents were Dempsey Welch and Elizabeth Rebecca Young. She was enumerated with her parents in 1850 in Copiah Co, Mississippi. [2] She was 10 years old with three older brothers, Jenkins, Thomas, and Augustus and one younger sister, Martha. Dempsey was a planter from Georgia and had $2400 in property value. All of the children had attended school in the past year. Melissa Welch with family in Copiah Co, Mississippi, 1850 From this record it appeared that her father, Dempsey was well off.
