Mam-ma's Southern Family

Most documents that name my maternal 2x-great-grandfather, name him as P. H. Hutson. These include deeds and tax records in Comanche County, Texas, a marriage record in Hood County, Texas, and tombstones of infant children of P. H. and S. H. Hutson. [1] Other variations on documents include: 1900 census gives his name as Peter H. Hutson and his wife as Sallie. [2]   A newspaper article about the new trustees of the Gustine public schools lists his and the other trustees’ names as initials. [3] Another article talks about “Uncle Pete” going fishing and catching a nine pounder, and on the same page a story that his daughter, Mrs. Johnson of Gomez visiting “Uncle Pete Hutson.” [4] A third article mentions “Uncle Pete” visiting his daughter, Mrs. B. W. Speed. [5] 1910 census lists him as Pet K Hutson. [6] His wife’s tombstone lists her as Sarah Hellena, wife of P. H. Hutson. [7] 1920 census lists him as Pete H. Hutson. This month, I’m working on the Hutson/Selman family, one of my sixteen 2x-great-grandparents, P. H. Hutson and his wife, Sarah “Sallie” H. Selman. What I Know Sallie died on 26 September 1916 in Throckmorton County, Texas, though her residence was likely in Comanche County. [1] The Texas death certificate has no information about a person’s residence, only about the place of death. She was married but her husband is not listed (no line for it) and he was not the informant. Other documents point to her residence. On 28 January 1915, P.H. Hutson and his wife, S. H. H. Hutson, of Comanche County, sold land to N. E. Palmer, pointing to their residence in Comanche County. [2] She is buried at Union Cemetery, located in Gustine, Comanche County. [3] P. H. Hudson and Miss S. H. S. Selman married in Hood County, Texas, on 11 September 1879. [4] The surname of Hudson is a minor conflict as the two names sound similar. This past week, I have been trying to locate Peter H. Hutson's purchase of land in the Chas Sargent Survey that Peter and his wife, Sarah, sold to T. J. Hayes on 17 January 1897. [1] I have used full-text search for “Hutson,” “Hudson,” and “Huston” with no luck. I also checked the grantee index with no luck. I began searching using full-text search on a portion of the land description, but have not yet finished that. I located a deed where J. E. Palmer sold some land located in the Chas Sargent Survey to J. T. Cobbs in 1889. [2] This J.E. Palmer also sold land in 1892 to Peter but in the Lucy Pearsall Survey. J. E. Palmer is likely the John Ephraim Palmer who married Sarah’s sister, Mary Caroline Selman. [3] In the deed description for the land sold to Cobb, “Hutson” is mentioned: “at the northeast corner of a subdivision survey made for Hutson now occupied by Thos.
